As a new appointee headed for Budapest, Hungary, my in-country ministry has yet to form. However, there is an important and engaging topic I think should be included. That is, "Should We Send Missionaries To Europe?"
In short:
- The church knows that Europe has forgone its Christian faith and Judeo-Christian roots.
- Yet, the church in America, as a whole, has very little interest in seeing the gospel return to Europe.
- The massive push for the 10-40 Window, while a great thing in so many ways, has had the negative impact of dropping all of Europe off the missions-radar.
- Yet, Europe is full of immigrants from 10-40 Window countries! Furthermore, those immigrants have typically left their home country seeking opportunity and a new life. They are searchers and seekers on many levels - individuals who, if redeemed, could bring the gospel back into 10-40 Window countries.
My emphasis is on Hungary, which is a prime example of the overall argument made above. Budapest is now stretching its arms into the free social and political air. They are desiring change and do not know where to find it, or who to trust. Meanwhile, they are receiving large immigrant populations from China and Africa.
We must keep up our efforts in Africa, Asia, and South America, but we need to adopt Europe as well. It is not acceptable for the church to merely look at Europe as an example of what the US might turn into. We must look at Europe in a new light, with efforts to re-introduce the gospel to what could ostensibly be considered an unreached continent.
