Catastrophic Flooding in Pakistan

Photo: Qasim Berech / Oxfam
Listen to Hans Finzel interview WorldVenture workers and Pakistanis in Pakistan:
Pakistan has been devastated by what many are calling an unprecedented disaster. Monsoon rains of almost biblical proportions—some weather experts say a year's worth of rain fell in just one day!—have caused massive flooding throughout the country, killing many, destroying hundreds of thousands of homes and disrupting the lives of millions. According to the U.N., more people have been affected by this catastrophe than the 2005 Asia earthquake/Indian Ocean tsunami and the 2010 Haiti earthquake combined. Over 20 million Pakistanis are currently suffering from a lack of shelter, food and medical care—and, with the rains still falling and many crops along the Indus River already destroyed, widespread famine is becoming a real possibility. Whatever the reason, aid from other countries has also been slow in arriving.

WorldVenture has already committed thousands of dollars to flood relief efforts, which are centered in and around Shikarpur, a city 18 miles from the Indus River in Sindh province, where the organization operates a hospital. Despite incredibly difficult circumstances, our medical personnel and associates in Pakistan are working overtime to provide food and medical treatment to as many people as possible. But the situation is overwhelming, and the need for additional food, medicine and medical workers remains dire. Please pray for a break in the monsoon rains, that God will multiply the "loaves and fishes" being provided to the Pakistani people and for strength for our medical personnel and aid workers, who are working so hard to alleviate the pain and suffering. And, please consider a sacrificial gift today to our Pakistan Relief Fund, so that WorldVenture can continue to provide help and hope to the hurting people of Pakistan.

Pakistan Update #20

Pakistan Bible Correspondence Institute (PCBI)

The PBCI guys recently traveled to the Dadu and Khairpur Nathan Shah areas, which they found overwhelming. The destruction was huge and in some low-lying areas, there is still up to 8 feet of water. They distributed a total of 250-300 ration packs to families in these areas, including about 150 in Khairpur Nathan Shah. In one place, after distributing packets, two of them were nearly attacked by an older man wielding a heavy club. He… Continue

With the flood waters in Pakistan now decreasing and people beginning to move back into or near to their villages, WorldVenture aid efforts are also shifting gears. While the hospital (SCH) continues to treat hundreds of local patients for the chronically poor health conditions for which they typically have no money to see a doctor, the need for medical clinics in the Internally Displaced People (IDP) camps is also lessening. At this point, all of the IDP camps and tent cities are expected to… Continue

Pakistan Update #18

In many places where flooding has occurred along the Indus River flood plain, the water is now receding, nevertheless in other areas the waters are still causing havoc. On the bright side, it seems that official aid is really getting through now, which means that we can move on to others who are being neglected, especially the poor and minority communities that seem to receive the least in terms of help (or nothing at all).

Efforts in the Sindh district will be somewhat different in… Continue

The Hospital (SCH)

Many of our regular patients are flood affected. One woman told us that the army awakened them in the night and warned them to leave. They fled in the darkness with only their clothing and children. Their house was destroyed and their animals drowned. In the camps, most have malaria fevers. There are many cases of eye, respiratory and skin infections. The number of malnourished children continues to be astonishing. I have seen more perforated and infected eardrums… Continue

Pakistan Update #16 “I have hit the ground running.”

Letter from a WorldVenture medical worker returning to Pakistan:I couldn’t see much of the flooded areas from the airplane; however, on the road between Sukkur and Shikarpur I saw many tent camps full of flood refugees…The Pakistan airline did not charge me for my excess luggage on my domestic flight to Sukkur, because I was bringing in medicine for the flood relief victims. I arrived back in Shikarpur in time to unpack a few things and then go down to the hospital to join the nursing staff for…See More

Pakistan Update #15

U.N. ReportAccording to a September 14 report from the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), flooding in Pakistan is still ongoing: 1) The emergency continues to unfold in the southernmost province of Sindh. Additional towns and villages in Dadu and Jamshoro districts have been flooded in recent days, as Manchar Lake breached its banks. 2) The health cluster warns of an increased risk of malaria, particularly in the south, in the coming days and weeks. 3) New towns…See More

Pakistan Update #14

Tales of tragedy and joyPersonal stories are of tragic loss and joyful deliverance are beginning to trickle out from the flood victims of Pakistan. We can’t vouch for the two below, but they were sent by reliable sources. In one village where a man in his late-twenty’s was living, water suddenly came gushing through with great force. The man and his wife decided to put their four young children on a charpai (a woven bed) to carry them to higher ground. As they carried the children through the…See More

Pakistan Update #13

SukkurPreparation began on 1,000 Eid packages to be given out leading up to Eid, Friday’s Muslim holiday celebrating the end of Ramadan. They will contain: suji, noodles, sugar, geh, a large bottle of pop (Pepsi/ Sprite), a large MilkPak, some sweets and ORS (water purification) preparation cards. One hundred and seventy of these were distributed.Something interesting happened today. People from some camps were blocking a road and demonstrating against authorities that had made promises of food…See More

Pakistan Update #12

The Hospital (SCH)An aid worker has suggested that we open a ward for malnourished children. Dr. Priscilla thinks that this would be doable with our current employees. Dr. Debbie will write to a contact with SIM who runs a child feeding center in Sudan to ask for their feeding protocol. She has also presented a proposed model for the medical camps that we will hopefully be able to use when our short-term teams arrive.Hyderabad Medical CampsMedical Camp 1 (August 31): Our first medical camp was…See More

Pakistan Update #11

Medical Personnel Needed! To further help address the health issues in Pakistan, we are hoping to send two medical teams to work with our medical practitioners at the hospital (SCH) in short-term blocks through mid-September to the end of October. If epidemics arise, they may need to be extended through November. Each team will need a male and female doctor (or provider), two nurses, as well as a team leader/coordinator, and a cook/laundry helper. The teams will be used for mobile medical camps…See More

Pakistan Update #10

Sindh ProvinceSindh province, where the hospital (SCH) is located, is 35% under water affecting some eight million people. The total number of IDPs in the relief camps is around one million, with 800,000 living in open fields. There are four helicopters operating in Sindh, which is a UN priority because flooding is still active here. The biggest problems that displace people in Pakistan are facing in right now are water, health and hygiene. Water filtration plants are being set up, with two…See More

Pakistan Update #5

Note from one relief worker to her familyWe spent yesterday and today at a "refugee camp" (it isn't an official one; the people just got dumped there by the highway.) The needs are so overwhelming, the pain is so great—basically every family lost husbands, children or wives, or have members separated from the rest of the family. Mostly it's women and children here, because the men stayed behind to try to save their animals. It all feels so helpless, but I guess if we can make a difference in a…See More
