The annual Mahajanga hot run half Marathon (13.1 miles or 21.98 Km) took place on Saturday, April 2nd. I had trained for it by running on the beach barefoot - what a joy. I had also had a few practice shorter runs at 3 PM in the afternoon to hopefully get use to the heat (85-90 degrees Fahrenheit). Tuesday, before the race I had to make a 1,350 kilometer drive into the country on secondary roads and arrived back in Mahajanga Thursday…

I couldn't believe all the extended sitting room at this small church. Yet, it filled up all because of one man. Pator Franklin shared with me that it was quite easy. Tompo-Franklin is the leader of his clan. He comes from the SE coast of Madagascar and has lived in Mahajanga for a long time. He decided to attend church so the whole clan joined him. Tuesday morning was overcast and cool - a great day for a run. However the tide was high. That means I couldn't run barefoot on the beach. So I put on my tennis shoes (old ones) headed out to run on the dirt roads. It felt good to be in shoes for a change. I headed for Grande Parvois beach. It is around 3 miles from my house. Well, it has been raining during the night so there are puddles of all sizes dotting the road. As i started this run I was discouraged.
