Mirror

Mirror

I am a mirror.

It boils down to this:

all the significance

I’ve longed for

is held within the simple truth

that I am a reflector.

I turn to God,

facing him in all his majesty,

to let him beam into my soul

and radiate from there

to light the world.

I must stay tuned,

sensitive to each adjustment

of my angle, knowing that

the Spirit is at work in…

Chaos and the Finger of God

Hurricane Sandy whipped the East Coast of the U.S. to shreds, and I thought about chaos theory: a butterfly flaps its wings in Hong Kong (or Brazil/wherever) and eventually a hurricane is born. Another image that fits is that of a pebble hitting a lake’s surface and the reactionary ripple swelling outwards into a circular wave.

Then last Saturday I sat in the Tiepogovogo church looking out at the sea of people who had come to Jakarija’s wedding. I remembered Jakarija as a little boy… Continue

On a Thread (or, Turning 60)

Yesterday was one of those landmark birthdays, when you face again the reality of numbering your years. This time my meditations were definitely influenced by recent deaths in the families of people I care about, from young to old (7 months,  4 years, 22 years, 37 years, 94 years). And yet I am stunned at the grace that covers this privilege of being alive. Once again, I listen to my heart via my pen.

On a Thread (7-14-2012)

It’s a quick walk on a fine…

Ant Work

Lately our translation team has been locked in what Abdoulaye (NT translator) has dubbed "ant work." We spend days, weeks, months, going over translated texts -- copyediting, reviewing, revising, proofreading -- to get to goal. It's easy to get lost in the details. A friend brought up the truth that some people are antlike,…

Permission to Play, or, Missionary on Vacation

It's been a series of months of intense work, of deep joys, of difficult tangles. Yes, the stress count was pretty high. So Glenn and I have taken a few days of rest in Abidjan, eight hours by road from home in Ferke. We stay with missionary friends who share their home with us, a courtyard in a suburb where few people know us. And this time we even took three days at the beach. We will soon be celebrating our 39th anniversary and both of our birthdays; this was our party.

I often…

Shalom and the Beauty of Repair

This morning, having loaned out our vehicle, Glenn and I stayed home from village church and listened to a podcast by Tim Keller:http://sermons2.redeemer.com/sermons/justice) The Lord has been teaching us many things about living for him lately, and it seems that most of them are about truly caring for others. This was yet another step on that journey. After listening, we prayed. Ironically…

Ahhhh . . . Africa!

Ahhhh . . . Africa!

salt waves pummeling your beaches

high winds whipping up the sand

rainstorms thundering on tin roofs

sunbeams bouncing off flat land

bulbuls signalling the sunrise

lean dogs howling to the moon

bat calls beeping in the darkness

cattle moaning at high noon

hand plows scooping out a corn field

pestels pounding grain to flour

axes felling scrub and forests

hammers…

Raucous Joy

An American friend asked me what would have been the most foreign aspect of our Christmas celebration this year. I was hard pressed to answer: the all-night Christmas Eve service? the all-night dancing? the miracles shared in the testimonies? eating on the benches and the floor? freezing in 57 degree weather? the way baptisms are applauded through singing and dance? the plastic mug we all share for communion? the “poyoyo” celebration dance of all that God has done for us this…

Saturday Morning

I have just opened up my book,

turned the first pages, relaxed,

when the “ko ko” sounds behind me

and there is yet another

person at the door for me.

This one, fatherless, wants funds

to go to school, to buy his books,

and prayer to help him through.

I turn to find distraction in the kitchen.

This is my day of rest, sabbat,

my Saturday when patterns change

and life can take a different…

Radical, Counter-Cultural Love

Today Levi* told me a story that grabbed at my heart. I told him that he should write a book, and he said that I am not the first one to suggest this. His journey would turn traditional African marriage values on their heads. It could teach American Christians deep truths. In view of recent reports that a noted American Christian leader has affirmed that Alzheimer’s is sufficient reason to divorce a spouse, we need reminding that the injunction to husbands in Ephesians is this: “Husbands, love… Continue

On Alert

bird on the branch,

still, alert,

quick response

to any noise,

to any move,

neck tensed

to whirl and

see what’s there,

ready to leap,

red eyes probing

my heart is poised

on its own perch,

ready to fly

or lift a prayer,

to see the truth

hidden in shade,

ears wide open

to hear the Voice

and trust the Breath,

ready to wait

Fireworks, Crises, and Finding that Safe Path

I admit that I no longer enjoy fireworks, or even firecrackers. A tire explodes at a mechanic’s shop in our neighborhood, and I startle. These harmless sounds are now tied to the blast of a mortar shell flying overhead, to danger.

We are hearing some fireworks from time to time (holiday fireworks), but so far, the gunshots are in the southern part of the country.

Eight years ago, in September, we went through eight days of “siege” – really, of hiding out,…

It's "to Die For!"

There are moments when the work of Bible translation is suddenly transformed into personal spiritual revelation and conviction. Not that we discover a “new” thing – just that suddenly the skin of some well-known term is peeled away to reveal something that we never understood in that way. It flows out of the special stew we brew daily: throwing the riches of several languages (Hebrew,English, French, Nyarafolo) into the pot and letting them simmer together.… Continue

Scorpions and My Mom

The two short-term girls spent their second night in the little cement house huddling together on one mattress. They had just come from suburban Boston to spend two weeks in Ferke, and the other mattress had become hostile territory when, restless, its occupant had looked up and seen a scorpion crawling up the inside of her mosquito net. The fact that a huge cockroach was on her neighbor’s net did not sway her from quickly changing beds.

Glenn, and their host, inspected the room and… Continue

Man of Sorrows

And this is comfort:

that when the children cry

the Man of Sorrows

suffers too.

Eternity encircled

and enclosed

the crossbar

of his suffering

with the despair of ages,

all our griefs

and every

ruination

choking out

the Breath of Life.

Heart broken

under awful weight

of every horror,

pain and burden,

he was crushed.

His throbbing lifeblood

spurted down

a tree he sculpted,

soaked… Continue

An African Manger

That December morning the harmattan wind off the wintery Sahara kept blowing its dust across the dry grasses and through the congregation gathered beside the little church. Its chill was a welcome contrast to the usual heat of northern Ivory Coast, and we had a larger crowd than usual. Many had just come to find out what these “followers of the Jesus Road” were about to do next, so we sat outdoors.

This was the first-ever Sunday School program at the Tiepogovogo village church that… Continue

On Tasseled Grass and Finishing Well

This afternoon, fallen stalks of dry grass crunched under my feet as I wended my way out to the gravesite, following the crowd through old fields via a kind of path. Next to us the grass grew shoulder high, purple tassels dipping from the tips, and just beyond the denuded corn stalks dried where they stood.

As for mortals, their days are like grass, they flourish like a flower of the field; the wind blows over it and it is gone, and its place remembers it no more. (Ps.… Continue
