October Ministry Update

Celebration in Tordas

On the first Sunday in October we went back to the church we formerly served in the town of Tordas where they held their congregational “Thanksgiving Day.” Keith was invited to be the guest speaker. It was a joy to see this group of close-knit believers all working together to make their church work and glorify the Lord. The children and teens led the music with handbells, piano, guitar, and flute. In fact the teens always lead the greater part of the music since they… Continue

Very Uncertain Financial Times

Many wonder what the near future holds for Hungary's economic future. All of Europe is holding its breath and hoping things will get better. This link will show you how foreboding the cloud really is. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/financetopics/financialcrisis/7899304/Hungarys-IMF-revolt-augurs-ill-for-Greece.html

You know you are a missionary from Budapest when . . .

You know you are a missionary from Budapest when . . .

1. Your three teenage kids ask for their allowance in three different currencies.

2. You prefer Euros over dollars.

3. You forget the English word for something.

4. Your small kids ask, “Do they have McDonalds in America too?” You think that the McDonalds in Budapest is cleaner and classier than in the USA.

5. You can’t stand to drink American coffee anymore since it is so weak.

6. When away in the USA, you… Continue

Rallied by the Command of God

Below is an excerpt from James Stalker's 1889 book, Imago Christi: The Example of Jesus Christ. Stalker was a young Scottish pastor when he wrote this work. His comments are still relevant for today. Rev. Stalker strips away the romanticism of missionary and pastoral ministry and brings us face to face with the command of God and the example of Christ.

What does Christmas mean to Hungarians?

A recent television news broadcast on the M1 TV station (Dec.23rd 7:30 evening news edition, www.hirado.hu) published a statistic on what Hungarians think about the Christmas holiday. According to the report 52% say it is a time to celebrate love, 32% say it's a time to be with family, 14% say it's the time to celebrate the birth of Christ, 1% a day off from work, 1% other. Experts say that the religious element of Christmas has become more in the back of… Continue

Christmas in the USA

The other day we went to an English class held by a Hungarian pastor in his home. Our purpose was to tell how we celebrate Christmas in the USA. I never imagined that Hungarians would ever want to hear about how we celebrate Christmas in the USA. Some like our decorative and culinary ideas so why not throw in some of our spiritual ideas along with the mix? Our decorative and culinary customs are not necessarily exclusive of North America since they were brought in by immigrants from all over… Continue

H1N1 in Hungary

Magyar news says the H1N1 virus is on its way here. A couple of schools have been closed in Hungary. The Ukraine has been hit hard, about 1 million infected and 180 dead according to Hungarian news reports. Neighboring Austria reports about 10,000 cases. The next couple of weeks should be interesting. Thankfully we were able to receive both the regular and the H1N1 vaccinations-- a great blessing.

The Human Side of the Ministry of Jesus

The Gospels never cease to amaze me with their portrayal of Jesus Christ. I am still trying to learn from the Gospels. Recently I received two books in the mail-- Jesus and the Gospels by Craig Blomberg and The Historical Jesus by Gary Habermas. A lot of the content of the books is technical, but much needed in a world which 2,000 years later is still grappling with the Jesus-question: Who was/is He, and so what?

Moms Seeking Answers

At the small Bible fellowship we serve one Christian mom and dad expressed the desire to be good parents for their children. At the beauty salon in South Budapest Beverly had an interesting conversation with another mom who although not a professing Christian is seeking some type of religious/spiritual instruction for her kid. Beverly recommended our Bible fellowship where mom and kid could study the Bible. The lady wrote down the name of the place where we meet. We think that there are more… Continue

Lost Empires and Lost People

Just yesterday I drove my nine year old Opel from South Buda to North Buda to drop it off at a mechanic's garage. It was in desperate need of repair. After a good walk I boarded the HÉV, a commuter train, and rode from the ancient Roman settlement of Aquincum, past ugly apartment blocks constructed in social realist form. Later I boarded a tram, a villamos, located by the Danube, directly opposite the Parliament building constructed from 1884-1902 during the period of the Dual Monarchy,… Continue
