My First Beginning

Thirty-four years, two months, and twenty-four days ago, I was born into a missionary family. As I told WorldVenture, our missions agency of choice, "I took my first breaths on March 13, 1975 at 5,280 feet above sea level, when a Jewish doctor delivered me into the waiting arms of an Italian, Conservative Baptist, ex-Catholic priest and his Filipino wife. No, this is not the beginning of a bad joke ... it really was how my life began and I am grateful to God for it! My parents were students at Denver Seminary, preparing for full-time ministry among the Catholic people of the Philippines (with Worldventure, formerly CBI, formerly CBFMS) when I joined their multi-cultural missionary family and on the day I turned two years old, I set foot on Philippine soil, the place I would consider home for the next 20 years of my life." This beginning placed me in my parents' waiting arms and ushered into my life the role of first-born, daughter, and missionary/third-culture kid.

My Second Beginning

Twelve years ago, minus one day, my husband, Jordan, and I began a new life together as we promised God we would do everything within our power, by His grace, to become a family which would be an example to the world of His redemptive love. This beginning joined me as one with my best friend and began to shape me for the sanctifying role of wife and helpmeet.

My Third Beginning

On February 17, 2004, when Megan Elizabeth was placed into our waiting arms by her birth mother and on April 4, 2007, when Christian Micah was placed into our arms by his birth mother, Jordan and I looked at each other and couldn't believe that we were finally walking the long-desired path of parenthood. This beginning shocked my system into the tumultuous joys and challenges accompanying the role of MOOOOOOMMMMMYYYYYYY!

And Now it Begins. Again.

Today, I am in a peace-filled disbelief that once again, by God's AMAZING GRACE, we are just an hour away from meeting the families with whom we will candidate for acceptance into full-time, long-term service with WorldVenture, as missionaries in the dark city of Buenos Aires, Argentina. This beginning is one which will likely force me to consume several boxes of Kleenex in the next few days and will present me with more opportunities to lean on the grace of Jesus than I've ever experienced in the last 34 years, 2 months, and 24 days. I should probably put my picture next to "tears of joy" in an online wiki-dictionary.

From my earliest years, because of my family, my parents' ministry, my godly teachers at Faith Academy (Manila, Philippines), to my young adulthood, because of my choice to attend Biola University, my acceptance of Jordan's marriage proposal, our choosing of a wonderful home church, and let's face it, God's consistent call ... I have dreamed of serving as a career missionary in a cross-cultural setting. I have had my moments of wishing I did NOT have this call on my life because life here in Denver is wonderful and comfortable and I love it. However, as much as I love Denver, I love the idea of following God's call overseas even more. I can't say no. You couldn't promise me enough health and wealth to say no. I want to follow God, along with my husband and children, to the ends of the earth ... because that is where He is calling us to go!

This blog, Journey of an Appointee, will be a chronicle of my family's path to the mission field, in partnership with WorldVenture, Mission Hills Church, and a host of saints with whom God has seen fit to bless our lives. As is always the case with me and my writing, I promise to be honest and to share with you the good and the bad, so that it is a journal of joy and struggle ... not just all one or the other. If you follow this blog, please share it with the following people in your life, to bring encouragement to them and to stimulate conversations between us:

1. Missionaries!!! Those who are on their way to the mission field!!!
2. Those who are considering a life in missions
3. Those who are supporting missionaries with prayer, finances and by serving alongside them with short-term opportunities
4. Those who love to connect with missionaries
5. Pastors
6. Family members/friends of missionaries
7. Writers who have a passion for missions
8. Missions agencies
9. Missions magazines
10. Anyone you feel would benefit from a blog like this ... and would be able to contribute to this project.

I need to go ... it's almost time to "report for duty" at WorldVenture. I can't believe this chapter in our lives is finally here. God is so good! Time to go find some Kleenex.
