Church on Sun. was my first real moment in Bolivia of oh no what am I going to do and the funniest part is that it had nothing to do with culture or language difference it all came down to my oh so fun gluten allergy. Near the end of the church service they brought out the juice and bread for communion which is a very normal thing except as I am sitting there in the pew I have a flash of realization that I can't eat bread now I know this and I am not sure why it took me so long to figure out that I can't eat the bread for communion. So I am sitting there a brand new missionary in a church where they have just introduced me as a missionary and I can't take the bread and also can't explain why not. I am stuck I can't eat the bread, but it would look really bad if this new missionary passes on the bread as it would be very noticeable. so I am sitting there and waiting for them to bring the bread around debating in my head what I should do. So I faked it and I know that sounds terrible but when everyone else bowed their heads and ate their bread I had to hide mine in my purse. thankfully everyone closed their eyes and I was able to do it with out anyone noticing. Then they bring the juice which wasn't juice it was wine hmm I should have guessed that huh it is Latin America and that is pretty normal. The only problem is I don't really like the taste of wine so first I can't eat the bread and now I don't want to drink the wine. The thing is it's not a good idea to try and hide the wine in my purse so I had to break down and just drink the wine. Welcome to my life in Bolivia with a gluten allergy. The whole situation was just too funny and I had a good laugh afterward, but there was a few minutes where I felt rather sacrilegious hiding bread and faking communion. Thankfully God knows my heart and that even if I do not eat the bread I am not being disrespectful, and also that God has a sense of humor and probably enjoyed the situation as much as I did.

Hi Laura! You're poor mother is so far behind on technology that I'm today (12/1) just reading this post. (It's also the first chance I've had to do something like this in weeks! Thankfully the family room remodel is over, and so is Thanksgiving, so I have some time now.)I loved it! I can just see you there, squirming in your seat, with all these questions going through your head. How was the wine? Maybe not as bad as some I hope. Love you, Mom

Hi Laura!
Isn't email wonderful? This is a great time to be a missionary. I can't imagine how hard it was in the past to wait for weeks or months for mail.

You're pretty funny about communion. Would even just a little piece of bread hurt? Are you sensitive to gluten? Same with the wine. At least it kills germs. What about the girl you're with? you haven't said a word about her. Are you bonding?

Take care of yourself and keep us posted
Love, Sue.
