…on the front burner…
“Time flies”
2009…A new year…Another year…
Do you ever think about how you interact with the construct of “time?”
I rather doubt there are too many physicists among us who think in terms of Einstein’s theories on time. At times, we think of time in precise engineering terms in which we measure hours, minutes, and seconds. This framework lends itself to our understanding of the present – or perhaps more accurately when we’re running late! I suspect that most of us recall the past in the cultural terms of events and people. For example, when I think about 1991, I have largely forgotten the hours, minutes and seconds of that year. I do recall 1991 as our year in language school in Costa Rica, I remember the first Gulf War, I remember that Christine’s brother got married, and I remember building friendships with half our Caracas team as we journeyed through language school together—it’s not that we didn’t like the other half, but they were in Venezuela and we were in Costa Rica! I’m sure other things happened in 1991, but these events and people stand out in my mind.
So, what events and people will be remembered from 2009?
Currently, we are in the midst of Renewal Conference. But RC is more than a conference, it’s an important WorldVenture event that strengthens our collective resolve to grow in Christ and with each other. In past years, a particular presentation, a series of messages, the prayer summit, a blizzard, the flu bug have each been memorable characteristics of our time together. Okay, maybe the flu bug was a forgettable experience! Please take a moment right now and pray for this RC and the 100 or so gathered together this week. Pray too for the invited guests that they will discern God’s leading in their lives. We’re trusting that this will be a memorable week.
I also want to take this opportunity to introduce a couple of meta-events that are and will be occurring this year and next. I want to draw these events to your attention for two reasons:
1. For your reflection – “Do I need to participate in these events?”
2. For your consideration – “Which national leader(s) would both contribute to and benefit from these events?”
Call2All Regional Gatherings -
www.call2all.org
Call2All is a worldwide movement calling the church to a renewed, focused collaborative effort to complete the Great Commission.
Call2All is about all nations, all spheres of society and every unreached person everywhere in the world. It is a strategy-centered, action-oriented movement focusing on where the Church is NOT, rather than where it is. Its purpose is not to replace existing ministry but to network, train and focus the body of Christ to fulfill the Great Commission.
Call2All is about engaging Christian leaders in new and more comprehensive strategies.
Call2All is drawing together the Global Church in an unprecedented way to reach the least, the last and the lost.
Call2All convenes Christian leaders in Strategy Congresses and provides new avenues for training to foster a global move of God.
Among other organizations, the following groups are partnering together in Call2All: Youth With A Mission, Luis Palau Association, International Orality Network, Campus Crusade for Christ, International Mission Board, Wycliffe, and the World Evangelical Alliance.
The Lausanne Movement, Cape Town 2010 www.lausanne.org/gatherings.html
At the urging of evangelical leaders worldwide, the Lausanne Movement, with the participation of the World Evangelical Alliance, will host the Third Lausanne Congress on World Evangelization in Cape Town, South Africa, 16-25 October 2010. Cape Town 2010 will provide a global forum – before, during and after the Congress – in which leaders from around the world will explore issues facing the Church and God’s world. Then together, leaders will prayerfully seek God’s guidance in responding so that God’s name may be honored and many more men, women and young people will be able to hear and respond to the message of Christ presented in a relevant and culturally appropriate manner.
It is anticipated that over 4,000 leaders from 200 countries will attend Cape Town 2010. The Participant Selection Team, made up of leaders worldwide, has established specific criteria to ensure that the Congress will include men and women from a broad spectrum of nationalities, ethnicities, ages, occupations and denominational affiliations.
While
Call2All is focused on regional gatherings and
Cape Town 2010 is a global gathering, the opportunity to network for the sake of reaching the lost just may make these events memorable throughout eternity.

The Dance of Life: The Other Dimension of Life by Edward T. Hall.
Hall's book (1983) studies the ways that people are tied together and yet so isolated by hidden threads of rhythm and walls of time. The Dance of Life treats time as a language, organizer, and message system revealing people's feelings about each other and reflecting differences between cultures.
