on Christmas morning
we shivered in the endless dark
and watched the vague line
of horizon beyond the trees
turn violet then lavender
then saw the deep rose disk
move powerfully up into
a lightening sky as red rays
soothed the night away
and there it was
the rising sun had come to us
from heaven and was pushing
back the dangerous black
that hid the path
and all the lurking threats
that wait for wanderers
stumbling in their fumbling
search for the one way home
to loving welcome
and forever peace
